Residency Programs
Common Counsel coordinates two residency programs which serve more than 70 individuals and organizations each year: The Mesa Refuge, a Northern California retreat center for writers addressing strategies for restructuring the economy and its relationship to people and the natural world; and the Windcall Residency Program for social, economic and environmental justice organizers and activists. Common Counsel is also the fiscal sponsor of the Windcall Institute, which aims to forge strategies, including the Residency Program, to sustain social justice leaders.
Windcall Institute and the Windcall Residency Program help organizers and leaders in the social, economic and environmental justice movements stay in their work for the long haul, maximizing their contribution to solving the nation's pressing issues. Windcall inspires leaders to:
- Rediscover their purpose and direction, moving from burnout to renewed energy
- Continue in their leadership role, keeping their organizations stable and vibrant
- Innovate and launch new efforts
- Create work cultures that are more sustainable for social justice organizers
The Mesa Refuge residency program supports the development and dissemination of new strategies for restructuring the human economy and its relationship to people and the environment. Each year, the Mesa Refuge hosts over 40 innovative writers working on a wide range of topics related to economic and environmental sustainability and related social equity issues.
